draw_diagram

Your agents draw in Excalidraw.

Ask an agent to draw the architecture or the flow it just traced. It places every Excalidraw shape, label and arrow itself, and the diagram lands beside its window, ready for you to edit.

Iris’s Claude Code window, which read src/checkout and called draw_diagram, beside the hand-drawn Checkout flow diagram it made: Checkout API, a Session valid? decision, Cart service, Stripe, Orders DB and Receipt email.

Excalidraw on the canvas.

  • Ask in words

Type “draw the checkout flow” or say it with voice. The agent calls the canvas tool draw_diagram; no Mermaid, no image file.

  • Editable, not a picture

Every box, label and arrow is an Excalidraw element. Move it, restyle it, delete it or draw beside it.

  • Beside the agent that drew it

The diagram seats next to its agent’s window with a line back to it, so you always know whose drawing it is.

  • The agent checks its own work

With read_diagram the agent sees the drawing as you do, then revises that same diagram instead of stacking a new one.

  • Dark, Light or Paper

Diagrams start on dark glass. Switch a selected one to Light or Paper on the canvas.

  • Any agent with canvas tools

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor CLI, Gemini CLI and the rest reach it over MCP; Pi and Aider through a shell command.

How it connects.

What Starkomand reads, keeps and needs for Excalidraw.

Engine Excalidraw 0.18, built into the appThe open-source library. No excalidraw.com account, nothing uploaded.
Agents use The canvas tool draw_diagramAdded at launch. CLIs without MCP get the starkomand-canvas command.
Layout Placed by the agentIt sets every shape, label and bound arrow, so the layout carries the meaning.
Revisions Replace only that diagramread_diagram returns the rendering; the next call names its diagram and revision.
Saved In the canvas on your MacWith each workspace’s layout, in the app’s local storage.

Set up in a minute.

  1. Open an agent

⌘-click the canvas and pick Claude Code, Codex or any agent. Canvas tools are added for that launch only.

  2. Ask for a diagram

Prompt or say it: “draw how a request reaches the database”. The agent reads the code first, then draws.

  3. Edit it

Click into the diagram to move boxes, rename labels or add your own. Ask the agent to revise it any time.

Worth knowing.

  • Gemini CLI starts MCP servers only in folders you trust, so its canvas tools appear once the project folder is trusted.
  • Aider asks you to confirm each shell command, including the one that draws.
  • A persistent agent running in Herdr draws too, but its diagram has no line back to the window.

Questions.

Can Claude Code draw Excalidraw diagrams?

Yes. On the Starkomand canvas, Claude Code gets a draw_diagram tool at launch and draws native, editable Excalidraw diagrams next to its window. Codex and the other agents get the same tool.

Do I need an Excalidraw MCP server?

No. The canvas serves its own tools to every agent it launches, through flags or one namespaced config entry. Your own MCP servers stay loaded beside it.

Is this excalidraw.com?

No. Starkomand’s canvas is built on the open-source Excalidraw library and runs on your Mac. Diagrams stay in the app; nothing is sent to excalidraw.com.

Can I edit a diagram after the agent draws it?

Yes. Every element is a regular Excalidraw shape. Edit by hand, or ask the agent for a revision, which replaces only that diagram.

Bring the agents you already pay for.

Every agent, every feature, free for 3 days. Your CLIs are already installed; the canvas takes a minute.
